Intern Feature: Frank Lang

Today we feature Frank Lang, one of our Brass Mash interns! Frank has been supporting the band in multiple capacities and hopes to produce music as a career. He creates his own music under the name ZeFronk, which is available to stream on Spotify.

Frank Lang, Brass Mash intern

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a second year music major. I enjoy producing music - that’s my dream career. I play the saxophone.

What do you do with Brass Mash?

I work the door a lot, so I collect ticket sales and whatnot. I’ve also worked the merch booth before, selling Brass Mash merch. I’ve helped with cameras a couple of times. I also help set up and tear down equipment before and after shows. Hopefully soon I can start mixing for the band, doing sound.

What got you interested in working with Brass Mash?

I was talking with the head of the music department, Dr. Doyle. I told her that I really wanted to get into sound, engineering, producing and whatnot. She gave me Mr. Dean’s number, so I contacted him and said “I heard you have an internship position available?” He told me about the band and that he was looking for more help. I was stoked, it sounded like a great gig. So I was down!

How do you hope to leverage your experience for the future?

It looks great on a resume to have this internship. I’m already learning a lot about live sound, and that will help me in the field because I’ll have a little more experience and I’ll know what I’m looking at. There’s a lot of gear that goes on with Brass Mash! Which I was not expecting - I don’t really work live sound, but they have a whole lot of gear going on. Even just helping to set up - that helps a lot, seeing what everything does and where it goes, and how it helps get the best sound possible. I think that will be super useful when I start looking for other stuff in the future.

What else have you learned in the process of working with Brass Mash?

I’ve learned to be patient with people when working the door - not everyone is quick to pay or figure out how to get that stuff. It’s also helped me become a bit more personable, especially at the door - you’re one of the first people they see, and the first face-to-face conversation. That’s taught me to be more easygoing and cool with people, because that makes a better impression. Before they even hear the band, it’s their first idea of what to expect. That’s the biggest thing - just social skills, outside of all the technical stuff.

Projects to share:

I’m always working on music on the side. I have a song out on streaming platforms under the title “ZeFronk.” I’m always making music, it’s my dream gig and what I love doing. Brass Mash helps me pursue that passion and delve further into music. At first I thought I just wanted to produce, but it’s helped me broaden my horizons as to how open sound is as a field. There are so many jobs available, so many different positions, so many different ways you can experience sound. It’s helped me appreciate that a lot more.
